Landbased technology

In landbased production we can control the water quality, water speed, and temperature, of the environment our fish live in.

Our operating philosophy is that landbased facilities shall be designed in accordance with fish health and welfare principles. This is implemented in our requirements to suppliers, and the construction, management, and daily routines of landbased facilities.

Smolts in bowl

12 - the magic figure for smolt

In Cermaq we apply 12-12-12 when we raise smolt.

This means that the fish should experience maximum 12 mg CO2 per litre of water in the tank where it lives.

And we want our fish will have 12 hours of light and of darkness before it starts smoltification. That is to give the fish a winter signal so that is lives through a winter and will naturally experience a spring period where the fish wants to smoltify and swim from the rivet to the ocean.

And finally, we want to keep the fish at 12 degrees Celsius through the freshwater period. That is to give the fish more calm conditions so, the fish has time to develop what it needs of organs, good skin condition and all the rest it needs to be a robust smolt ready for the ocean

Biosecurity

The core of biosecurity measures are effective barriers and the possibility of to disinfect separate elements and areas in the facility independently when needed. This is the basis when designing a landbased facility.

To protect our fish, we establish barriers against people, water intake, feed, and other factors that may impact biosecurity.

We monitor the biosecurity status, disinfect as preventive measure according to plan, and if needed as emergency response.

Choosing the optimal technology

The major technologies are RAS (Recirculation), Re-use (with limited purification of the re-use), and Flow-through. Cermaq uses all three technologies in its operations. What decides which technology to use, include factors as

  • Access water volumes
  • Water temperature and other qualities of the intake water
  • Conditions for water discharge

By choosing the optimal technology we can ensure fish good water quality in the tanks where they live.
