Cermaq ASC certified salmon recommended by Seafood Watch

2017-06-05: Cermaq’s ASC farmed salmon will be in even greater demand, thanks to an update in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch standards.

“This is great news, and we are pleased to see that all the hard work is starting to be recognised by organizations such as the Monterey Bay aquarium says David Kiemele, Cermaq Canada’s Managing Director. “We look forward to supplying our existing and new customers with healthy and sustainable, certified salmon”.

The ASC promotes responsibly farmed seafood through its extensive certification and labelling program.

The standard, which was established with oversight from environmental groups, is firmly grounded in science and responsible environmental practices, and is only earned by farms that go above and beyond regulations and standards for minimising their environmental impacts.

We are proud of our employees who have worked so hard to achieve this certification,” said Laurie Jensen, Cermaq Canada’s Communication and Corporate Sustainability Director. “We have all been working hard since 2013 towards the goal of having all our fish certified to this strict, science based standard. This recognition supports the sustainability framework that Cermaq strives for in all aspects of our production.”

Cermaq aims to have 100% of our production farms ASC certified by 2020.

Cermaq is also a member of the Global Salmon Initiative, (GSI) which is a leadership initiative established in 2013 by global farmed salmon producers focused on making significant progress on industry sustainability. At present, nearly a quarter of all farmed salmon produced globally is ASC certified, and members of the GSI are the main sources of ASC farmed salmon world-wide.

Cermaq Canada is a salmon farming company based in Campbell River, BC. The company produces fresh Atlantic salmon at 20 production sea sites around Vancouver Island and employs more than 250 people. The company also operates four freshwater facilities, two offices, and one processing plant. Cermaq Canada is part of the Cermaq AS group, which is headquartered in Oslo, Norway.
