Why do Cermaq have farming operations in British Colombia, Canada where indigenous people do not want farming?

Cermaq strives for good relations with all stakeholders and we aim to be a reliable partner in the communities where we operate. In British Colombia there are many First Nations, and they have their own specific opinions about fish farming.

Cermaq has a protocol agreement with the Ahousaht First Nations which is one of the largest First Nations and has its territory on the western side of Vancouver Island where around half of Cermaq’s production is located. The protocol guides the principles for working together and establishing a sustainable and mutually beneficial salmon farming operation.

We recognise that not all First Nations want fish farming in their territories. Our ambition is to have agreements with the First Nations who hold titles and rights in the areas where we have operations.
