Does salmon farming present a risk for wild salmon?
The main concerns about any possible threats that salmon farming may have upon wild salmon are related to sea lice, diseases and escapes. However, there are many more external factors that also influence the health status for wild salmon populations. Escapes is a special concern in Europe as the wild salmon is the same species as the farmed salmon; Atlantic salmon. Diseases may spread from wild fish to farmed salmon and then back again to wild fish. As salmon in pens represent a high concentration of fish, it is important for fish farmers to carefully manage the health of fish stocks. This is good practice in fish husbandry. The successful salmon farming industry is based on the wealth of the wild salmon stocks and protecting these stocks is important to Cermaq. We have a zero-escape vision and strive for good sanitary conditions to ensure that salmon farming is not a threat to the important wild fish populations.
